Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. 1st Edition Thus. First printing of the fiftieth anniversary edition, hardcover, signed by le Carré on the title page, the book has a mild skew to the binding, and slight bumps to the spine ends. Otherwise, this is a solid, tight, clean and sharp Very Good+ copy in a like, unclipped dust jacket, which has a touch of wear to the spine ends and corners, and some very faint rubbing to the covers. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar, and additional images are available upon request. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. There were four impressions of this Gollancz first edition before publication in September 1963. (The good reviews must have surprised them -- this small book certainly doesn't show any extravagant production values.) Copyright page here identifies this copy as a "Fifth Impression September 1963." Signed "John le Carre" (name only) to a 3-X-5 white card laid in. Card could be tipped or mounted to the FFE, but we have not done so. Frankly, as such artifacts are transferable, our personal preference is for books signed by the author directly to the page, but that's the way this (reasonably handsome) copy came to us, and given the desirability of Mr. Le Carre's signature, we have left as found. Book very-good-plus in a very good original dust jacket which has moderately faded to spine. Jacket front flap still reads "18/- net." Rear panel of this unprepossessing little jacket is plain white; it shows a pattern of four moderate smudges near the top which we presume to be fingerprints. Le Carre's breakthrough realistic novel of Cold War espionage was hailed by Graham Greene as "the best spy story I have ever read." The 1965 Martin Ritt film starred Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, and Oskar Werner, garnering Burton an Academy Award nomination. 222 pp. Reduced from $450. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. The Book Club issue of the first American edition. 8vo. 256pp. Quarter black cloth with grey sides, lettered in gold at the spine and with the author's facsimile signature gold-stamped to the base of the upper board (the correct first edition binding is red backstrip cloth, not black). Publisher's orange top edge stain, very slightly faded. A narrow trace of light toning to the free endpapers and a little light spotting to the fore edge. Retail price sticker to the tip of the front free endpaper (which I have not attempted to remove). A very good copy in the later state Book Club issue dust wrapper, repeating the original design, but with four quotes to the rear panel instead of three, no price printed to the head of the front flap, but the base of the flap clipped (where the original Book Club identifier should be found). Rear flap printed in black instead of black and red, and here omitting the imprint details. A very good copy of the Book Club issue of the first American edition - not in itself uncommon and particularly desirable, but this copy considerably enhanced by the presence of a title-specific bookplate signed by the author and pasted to the front free endpaper. The author's third novel, winner of multiple awards including the 1963 Gold Dagger, the 1965 Edgar Award, and the 2005 'Dagger of Daggers'. Signed by Author(s).
