First edition. First edition. Signed as "Ellery Queen on the title page. A dazzling as new copy with white ink on front cover and spine bright and un-chipped, in dust jacket with light wear to the spine ends and a few minor nicks and wear to the extremities and corners. The author's third book following THE ROMAN HAT MYSTERY and THE FRENCH POWDER MYSTERY. "The richest and most famous woman in America is about to undergo a delicate operation, to be performed by her protege, one of the leading surgeons in the East, in the main operating theatre of the vast hospital which she founded. Relatives and friends, and even enemies, wait in the building with bated breath to learn the outcome of the operation. The institution is hushed; the medical audience is seated; the theatre is ready. The surgeon calls for his distinguished patient. A door opens, a long, still form is wheeled into the theatre. The surgeon bends over, lifts the sheet--- and finds the woman dead, murdered a few moments before almost under their very eyes." Original $2.00 price on jacket intact. The book itself is spectacular and is a handsome copy of a very scarce mystery title in any type of dust jacket, much less as nice as this one.

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1944. Original black cloth boards stamped in red-orange. Boards show shelfwear, rubbing and sunning. Scattered foxing and thumbsoiling internally with a smudge to the verso of flyleaf. Binding cracked at the half-title but holding firm. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. SIGNED & INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION. Water-stained boards on a good square copy happily without any of the foxing usually seen on this elusive title. Better than very good dust jacket is clipped (though not the price), shows only moderate creasing and just three relatively minor chips: two to spine extremities and one to lower rear panel. Book is from library of famed multi-millionaire bibliophile Edward T. (Ned) Guymon, intimate of Dannay & Lee, Hammett, Chandler, Christie, etc., (and the many whom Fred Dannay credits as being his guide & predecessor). On the front pastedown is Guymon's own weirdly fascinating bookplate. Book is a PRESENTATION COPY from Fred Dannay to Guymon's secretary Gertrude Larson, and bears this inscription penned in the bold cursive hand of Dannay: "To / Ned Guymon's / secretary -- / Gertrude Larson -- / with the best wishes / of the author / "Ellery Queen"." A highly fascinating association copy. This is also an advance copy which has the slip laid in. Signed by Author(s).

Light off-setting to the front and rear endpapers else a fine, bright copy in a bright dust jacket with light wear to the spine ends and corners, and small nicks and chips to the extremities. Accompanying this copy is an inked handwritten letter on Ellery Queen stationery and dated March 3, 1958. Frederic Dannay responds to questions posed by the recipient of this letter. Mr. Dannay says that he does not know which author first used hypnosis as an integral part of a story, and he cannot be of help with the book Cops And Robbers by O. Henry as "we have no copies left." He further advises that all matters involving money orders and subscription requests will be forwarded to the New York Office. Signed "Sincerely, Frederic Dannay." The letter contains three paragraphs and is about 85 words. The letter has two horizontal faint, fold creases and the original stamped mailing envelope is also included.

First edition. First edition. Signed on the title page "Ellery Queen"/ (Frederic Dannay). Fine, bright copy in price-clipped dust jacket with red color on spine lightly sunned and minor wear to the foot of spine. An important anthology as well as an early one that includes stories by Eberhart, Palmer, Rinehart, Footner, Starrett, Holmes [Boucher], Christie, Orczy, Hume, Bangs, Vickers, Wallace, et al. The introduction is quite informative. Queen says, "the first true detective in literature cracked open his eggshell in 1841, emerging 'fully grown and armed to the teeth.' Out of Poe's immortal rib [ no pun intended ] came the world's first woman detective---a full twenty years later." Queen goes on to say, "again obeying the primeval laws of nature--though less laggard, let it be noted, in matters pertaining to sin--woman came second. In all these years no one has collected in one 'feminology' the best exploits of our many distaff detectives, matronly murderesses, and petticoat pilferers." Thus does Mr. Queen explain this fascinating collection. Also contains Frederick Irving Anderson's The Jorgensen Plates, a publishing story featuring the technical aspects of publishing in England and the USA.
