  • Wrappers Over Boards. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. np (82pp), profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Cover by Pablo Picasso. Text in French. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This combined nineteenth and twentieth number of Teriade's legendary artistic review "Verve" is a monograph devoted solely to the work of Pablo Picasso. Realized under the direction of Teriade, it features front and rear covers specially designed by the artist for the project with the master printers Draeger Freres creating the then-state of the art heliogravure images in black and white and tipped color plates. Included are texts by both Picasso and Jaime Sabartes as well as reproductions of paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, letters, and more. An internally most handsome example of this lovely and fragile item additionally BOLDLY SIGNED WITH A DRAWING of flowers by Picasso in blue crayon across the entire "Antipolis 1946" page. It's striking color lithographic covers shows some wear, soiling, creasing, and adhesive ghosting along with some discreet professional reinforcement of the spine on the verso. The drawing and signature have been examined and vetted for us by a noted gallerist specializing in the work of Picasso, and we fully guarantee this item's authenticity. Original color lithographic covers not present. In French. Brown morocco, red and tan morocco onlays, pictorially tooled in gilt, spine titled in gilt, turn-ins ruled in gilt, red suede doublures, all edges gilt. Binding signed in gilt by Catherine Stanescu. Housed in a clamshell case, quarter morocco and marbled paper over boards, gilt leather labels, tan suede doublures. Paper edges of case rubbed, joints and leather edges of case moderately scuffed and worn, else very good. Binding and contents of book fine. In 1930, Paris art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard commissioned Marc Chagall to produce a suite of etchings illustrating the Hebrew Bible. The project precipitated Chagall's two-month visit the following year to the Holy Land, where he and his family were guests of Meir Dizengoff, founder and mayor of Tel Aviv. Chagall biographer Jackie Wullschlager describes the object of Chagall's journey as "not external stimulus but an inner authorization from the land of his ancestors, to plunge into his work on the Bible illustrations" (p. 349). The trip was transformative: art historian Jacques Lassaigne wrote that Chagall told him that Palestine gave him "the most vivid impression he had ever received," and Chagall stated in an address first delivered at Mount Holyoke College in 1943, "in the East I found unexpectedly the Bible and a part of my very own being" (Harshav, p. 77). The result was two series of etchings and lithographs, the first published in 1956 and the present second series in 1960. Franz Meyer has described Chagall's Bible illustrations as having "the same religious force as the Bible itself" (p. 393) and their interplay with the Biblical text as an "astonishing variety of word and image, of visual representation and nonvisual suggestion" (p. 388).From 1931 to 1959 - during three of the most significant decades of modern Jewish history - Chagall worked on the illustrations, producing 65 etchings before Vollard's death in 1939 and a final 40 for the first series between 1952 and 1956. Tériade had taken over publication from Vollard and in 1956 issued two uncolored and one colored signed and numbered editions of the series. Tériade issued reproductions of the etchings together with 29 lithographs as Nos. 33/34 double issue of VERVE magazine. In 1958 and 1959, Chagall resumed the project to illustrate "themes generally not treated" in the earlier work. Tériade published the new series in 1960 as the 37/38 double number of VERVE, the magazine's final issues. This second series contains 96 monochrome etchings reproduced in heliogravure (photogravure) by Draeger Frères and 24 color lithographic plates and a color lithographic cover (not present here) printed by Mourlot Frères. An English-language American edition was published concurrently. The present copy of DESSINS was finely bound by master bookbinder Catherine Stanescu (1908-1998), gracefully incorporating illustrations and design elements of Chagall's work in gilt and morocco onlay. Stanescu was born in Romania to a prominent family and married Ion Stanescu, who served as Royal Treaurer before the Communist takeover in 1946. Both escaped Romania but were separated for two years, during which period Catherine lived in Switzerland and studied French-style bookbinding. After migrating to the U.S. and settling in New York, she progressed in the artStanescu studied French-style bookbinding in Switzerland after fleeing her native Romania during the Communist takeover. In New York, where she eventually settled, Stanescu founded a studio and developed a devoted following of students, private and institutional clients for book restoration, and collectors of her artistic bindings. > En cas de problème de commande, veuillez nous contacter par notre page d'accueil / If you have any problems with your order please contact us via our homepage <.

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Published by Teriade in 1958 for the special edition of Verve Magazine devoted to the works of Matisse. Image Size: 34 x 25cm While suffering from ill health that prevented him from painting, Henri Matisse created his innovative, and bold gouache paper cut-outs. In 1953 he worked with the lithographer Fernand Mourlot and the art publisher Tériade to recreate the cut outs as lithographs. Matisse oversaw the first proof cut outs for the publication in 1954. However, he died in November 1954 before the magazine could be published. This special edition ofVerve was eventuallypublished in 1958 and became a tribute to Matisse. Entitled 'Dernières Oeuvres de Mattisse 1950-54' (Last Works of Matisse). The publication featured forty original lithographs of whichNue bleue Avec Les Grenadesis one. Henri Matisse was born 1869 in an industrial area of Northern France and almost accidentally stumbled into a career in art. Initially working as a legal clerk, he drew for pleasure in his spare time but he began to paint when he was recovering from an illness, and his career as a serious artist began. He moved to Paris shortly after where he was trained in classical painting but became aware of the art of Cezanne and Van Gogh who became influential figures in the development of his own artistic style. By the mid-1890s he was showing his works in large exhibitions and by the turn of the century, his style had become more progressive. A visit to St Tropez and later Coulloure, was the inspiration for him to infuse his works with light and bright colours. His work was more an abstracted realism, his human forms recognisable but altered. A critic nicknamed Matisse a Fauve or wildbeast , because of the way he portrayed the human form, and the name Fauvism became the term used to describe the works of Matisse and some of his contemporaries. In Matisse, it is characterised by the emphasis on the emotional power of sinuous lines, strong brushwork and bright colours, and he captures a mood rather than merely trying to depict reality. With his now defined style his success grew and he travelled extensively for inspiration. Following a permanent move to Nice, he created some of his most famous works, the Blue Nude pictures. Health issues resulted in surgery in 1941 and he was often bedridden. But this did not stop him from creating art. He devised means to paint or draw such as attaching pencils or brushes to long poles so that he could reach the canvas and his late works were as experimental and vibrant as his early works. His 1947 book,Jazz, showed a new approach in the use of paper cut-outs stuck to brightly coloured paper to create his art, a technique he used until his death in 1954. Spanning a 60 year career, his revolutionary use of brilliant colour and exaggeration of form to convey emotion makes him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Softcover. Matisse cover art. (illustrator). 1st edition. FINE book. IN FRENCH. SUPERB copy of the scarce French language edition, (preceded the English language edition). Folio, 128pp. Folio, 128pp. The 1988 Abrams book by Michel Anthonioz titled: "VERVE The Ultimate Review of Art and Literature (1937-1960)" is included with this order. In which Anthonioz states the covers were done under Matisse's direct supervision. It quotes a letter from Matisse to Teriade imploring he be notified of any problem in printing his covers. The 4 lithos were collectively titled "LES QUATRE ELEMENTS". Leger's "L'eau", Miro's "L'air", Rattner's "LE FER" & Bore's "LE TERRE". Also writings of Gide, Lorca, Dos Passos & Malraux. Photos by Bresson, Man Ray, Brassai. Cover colors bright as new. All 3 text block edges pristine, as are all pages, whether text or plates. A tipped in subscription and price slip, also in French, is inside the front cover. This info in the English language printing was on the title page. Print runs seldom exceeded 2000 and likely WWII destroyed many of the French language copies. The original binding glue, just inside both covers, had cracked a bit. Van Huizen Bookbinding, St Catherines, ON, Canada, touched this up and also ran a strip of Japanese tissue paper along the spine. The tissue paper lightened the spine color just a bit. This color difference is accurately shown in the photo. FINE wraps. 1st ed. "VERY FINE", "AS NEW" text & lithos.
