Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. Beautifully signed by Margaret Mitchell at front endpaper: "Margaret Mitchell". Rarity now approaching ninety years in existence in the original first printing wrapper. This signed first edition, the May 1936 printing, is very rare as are any of her signed books or other items. In a letter dated February, 1937, Margaret Mitchell wrote that she would no longer sign her book, nevermore for friends or even relatives. Butternut (greyish brown) full cloth boards, navy stamped cover and spine titles, light shelf wear, rub, spine pull. Deckled pages very good, clean; no writing. Bind fine; hinges intact. Original May first printing dust wrapper, generally good with approx. 1/3 of spine area missing; unclipped 3.00, protected in new clear sleeve. Front and back panels and flaps remain near very good. First state wrapper denoted by Charles Morgan's 'Sparkenbroke' listed at top of first column on back panel. Additionally, for preservation and presentation, includes a fine facsimile of the first edition wrapper. Ultra-rare near fine signed first printing in fair original wrapper and bright facsimile wrapper. Unparalleled drama, action and romance flower within the breathtaking wonders of this inspired spectacle of the written word and the most magnificently, exciting love story, ever! There were over one hundred printings of the first edition. Only 10,000 copies were produced of this true first printing in May, 1936. The subsequent June printing sold 50,000 copies on its first day, and two million after a year. Even though it is 1,037 pages long, readers all over the world snatched up the book; by 1937 it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the film rights had been sold to David O. Selznick. Mitchell prided herself on the historical accuracy of her work; and it is a sweeping account of how the Civil War tore apart an entire way of life. The stirring drama of the War Between the States and Reconstruction is brought vividly to life in this magnificent novel. Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara remain two of the most enduring characters in American fiction. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall. Signed by Author. Book.

First edition of Mitchell's masterpiece. Octavo, original gray cloth. First printing, with â Published May 1936â on the copyright page and no mention of other printings. Fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in near fine condition with a touch of shelfwear and price-clipped. A superior example. In 1923, Margaret Mitchell became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident. Over the next eight years she painstakingly researched for historical accuracy. She accumulated thousands of pages of manuscript. Here is how she later described her life's labor: "When I look back on these last years of struggling to find time to write between deaths in the family, illness in the family and among friends which lasted months and even years, childbirths (not my own), divorces and neuroses among friends, my own ill health and four fine auto accidents . it all seems like a nightmare. I wouldn't tackle it again for anything. Just as soon as I sat down to write, somebody I loved would decide to have their gall-bladder removed. . " In 1934, an editor from Macmillan's Publishers came to Atlanta seeking new authors. He was referred to John and Margaret Marsh as people who knew Atlanta's literary scene. She steered him to several prospects, but didn't mention her own work. A friend told him that she was writing a novel, but she denied it. On the night before he was to leave Atlanta, she appeared at his hotel-room door with her still imperfect, mountainous manuscript and left it with him for better or for worse. "This is beyond doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best" (New York Times). Gone With the Wind is said to be the fastest selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day), and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. GONE WITH THE WIND Mitchell, Margaret Published by New York: The Macmillan Co., 1936 With a 3 paragraph letter from Margaret Mitchell on her letterhead paper. New York: The Macmillan Co., 1936. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition, first printing, with "May, 1936" to copyright page. Publisher's gray cloth, stamped in teal to front board and spine. A near fine copy with a touch of rubbing to extremities, small closed tears to the center of each spine end, light toning to page edges; lacking the original dust jacket. Overall, a beautiful copy. Housed in a full grey Morocco clamshell box. Upon publication, Ms. Mitchell was inundated with books, waiting to be signed. Despite her efforts, she was unable to keep up with the demand for her autograph. Instead, in keeping with her sense of humor, the author included a personalized letter, typed and signed. The letter is addressed to My Dear Mrs. Watson and goes on to describe how time-consuming book signing really is. This letter provides its readers with a quick glimpse into the mind of a best-selling author and a remarkable woman. Gone with the Wind won Margaret Mitchell both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Perhaps best described as a work of historical fiction. The novel tells of archetypal Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara as she grows from a young woman into maturity against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Like many of the early 20th century Southern writers, Mitchell portrays an idyllic image of the antebellum South. While it can be legitimately criticized for its insensitivity to the treatment of African Americans who were enslaved, Mitchell's novel demonstrates how the South was decimated by the Civil War and continued to suffer under the Northern-sanctioned Restoration. It is also the basis of the 1939 Academy Award-winning movie, the conflicted love story of rebellious Scarlett and Rhett Butler remains an American classic.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Mitchell, Margaret, Gone with the Wind. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. First edition, first printing. Octavo. Includes typed and signed March 14, 1939 letter and envelope, tipped-in to the front of the book. Handsomely rebound in full gray Moroccan leather with raised bands, gilt titles, and stamps to the spine, and a custom slipcase. Presented is a first edition, first printing of Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. A signed letter by Margaret Mitchell to Ruth Hall Graham concerning the author s success after the book s publication is tipped-in to the front of the book. The book was published by The Macmillan Company in New York, in 1936. Even as Mitchell s only novel, the book gained impressive attention and was later adapted into a motion picture in December of 1939. Gone with the Wind was the fastest selling novel in American publishing history, with 50,000 copies sold in a single day. The book ranked as the most popular American fiction novel during the first two years of its release. The novel's release, originally scheduled for May of 1936, was delayed until June pending the Book of the Month Club schedule. Before a decision had been finalized, 10,000 copies were printed with the erroneous May release notice, which can be seen in this rare copy. The interesting tipped-in letter was written by Mitchell shortly before the film "Gone With the Wind" premiered. In the letter, the author references her famous novel, and how her life was upended after its publication. Addressed to Ruth Hall Graham of South Carolina, Mitchell writes: "I wish I could contribute something to the souvenir program, but I can't. I know that sounds very small and persnickety and I am sorry that I cannot make it sound any other way. / The reason I can't oblige you is that for nearly three years I have been getting hundreds of requests for endorsements, letters of congratulations et cetera. During the first year after 'Gone With the Wind' was published I was so swamped with business matters, lawsuits, foreign contracts et cetera that I did not have the time to do this for any organization. I have a great many requests from people here in Atlanta and was forced to refuse them, as I did not see how I could work longer hours than I was working. Now, having refused so many homefolks, I find myself in a very unfortunate situation - I cannot oblige anyone who makes requests like yours without offending many people here at home and making them feel that I had deliberately slighted them. I am awfully sorry and wish that things were different, for it would give me great pleasure to do as you wish. Good luck to you, Peggy." The one-page letter is signed Peggy and is typed on Mitchell s personal stationary, dated March 15, 1939. It is accompanied by the original envelope postmarked from Atlanta on March 15, 1939, with Mitchell's address embossed on the verso. This is a very collectible first edition, with a significant and telling tipped-in signed letter from the famous author. CONDITION: This first edition book is beautifully rebound in full gray Moroccan leather. The spine features gilt tooling, decorative motifs, and five raised bands. The book is in very good condition for its age, with only slight darkening of the pages from age. There are no signs of foxing, tears, or losses. Typed Letter Signed, Peggy , 1p, on her personal stationery, 7 x 10.875 , Atlanta, March 14, 1939. Accompanied by original envelope postmarked from Atlanta on March 15, 1939, with Mitchell's address embossed on verso, 7.25" x 4". Toning and pieces of tape to envelope; in good plus condition. Folds and light creasing to letter; overall, in very good to near fine condition. The book is housed in a custom-built archival gray cloth slipcase with a colorful photo of the 1939 film poster inlaid on the front. Small puncture hole next to the word 'The' near the spine. Margaret Mitchell?s ?Gone with the Wind? is a romance novel set in Georgia during the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era that followed. The novel centers on its protagonist, Scarlett O?Hara, and her struggle to rebuild and sustain her wealth, which had been lost as a result of the fall of the Confederacy. Using any means necessary, Scarlett regains what she has lost, in large part due to Rhett Butler, a scoundrel and scallawag with a bad reputation. The trials and tribulations of Scarlett and her unwavering perseverance make this novel an American classic. Winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1937, a year after it was first published, ?Gone with the Wind? went on to become an Academy Award-winning film in 1939. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Second printing ("Set up and electrotyped. Published June, 1936." with no other printings noted on the copyright page). This Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the Civil War was made into one of the most popular American films of all time. Copies of the book with both May and June dates look like first printings of the first edition. This is because the publication date of the book was pushed back a month, into June, after the May copies were printed. Copies with May and June dates with no additional printings noted probably hit bookstores at the same time (or nearly the same time). First edition. A very good copy in the original gray publisher's boards. Spine barely darkened, but with two vertical wear lines; some wear at the base of the spine. Previous owner's name in ink on the front free endpaper; small stain in the margin of the last 20 or so leaves; last text page with tears in the margin. A decent-looking copy, but lacking the dust jacket. A FACSIMILE jacket is supplied to protect the book and make it look sweet on your shelves.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Macmillan. New York. 1936. 1037 pages. First edition, 8th printing. Printed in August 1936; 2 months after the 1st printing in June 1936. Previous owner's name written on inside front panel pastedown. Binding and hinges are strong. Endpapers are clean. Small vintage 'retailed by MACY's' purple stamp on rear endpaper. Small textural scuff on FFEP. Shelf-rubbing along foot, crown and tips. Small closed edge tear at crown. Panels are clean. Partial thin crack to pastedown paper near gutter; no affect to front hinge whatsoever; just that paper dried and cracked; more of a minor aesthetic flaw than anything structural. Tiny closed edge tear on half-title page. $3.00 price clipped from DJ flap. DJ shows a couple of small closed edge tears and minor, tiny chips. Faint old pencil price on DJ front. All flaws noted with this 8th printing. It is a nice early copy of the classic; clean and strong; Good++. First edition; 8th printing.
