Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First American edition. Sampson Low published the first edition in English November1872 (though dated 1873). James Osgood published this first American edition from these same Sampson Low plates soon after. This copy was purchased in December 1872 by Governor Jacob B. Jackson and his wife Maria of West Virginia and given to their son William W. Jacskon for Christmas 1872 as inscribed in the prelims along with the original $3.00 price. Interesting to note that Gov. Jackson was the great nephew of General Stonewall Jackson. I believe I am the 3rd owner of this copy since found in the Jackson Family Library in Parkersburg, WV in 1985. This exceedingly scarce copy in green cloth, pictorially decorated in black and gilt, rear cover bordered in blind, brown end papers. With all 109 illustrations, including tissue guarded frontispiece. With all 1st issue points; Under the Sea printed on the front cover and the word "Seas" and on title page, jellyfish on the cover and "The End" printed on page 303. Taves & Michaluk V006; Myers 56. Now housed in a beautiful custom made clamshell, lined with marble paper and titled in gilt on the spine. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company (1873), 303 pages. VG; All original backing, little to no foxing, intact and relatively tight signatures; no repair work. Tender hinges, still holding; edge wear, spine ends and tips starting, bumped corners.

Illustrated, with a frontispiece and 109 plates. Collated, complete.?This is the true first edition in English, which has priority over the American edition of the same year. In fact, Sampson and Low published this edition in November 1872, although the imprint reads 1873. The first American edition was issued using the same Sampson Low plates.?In a very smart half cloth binding, with marbled paper boards.?With eight pages of adverts dated 1872-1873 to the rear as called for.?Former owner has excised the publisher's imprint to the verso of half-title in pen. The endpapers to this copy have been renewed. Pencil note to page 90 'these do not grow so deep' regarding 'pavonari'. To page 115 there is a pencil correction to 'lentil' with 'lens' written to the margin correcting: 'and provided with a lentil, he lighted a fire'.?20,000 leagues under the sea is a work of classic science fiction and adventure. It was first serialized in the French periodical the 'Magasin d'education et de recreation'. Following this a deluxe octavo edition was published by Hetzel in November 1871 with 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Edouard Riou. In a modern contemporary half cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. First Edition
First American Edition of Jules Verne's best known work about Captain Nemo and his submarine the Nautilus. This is the scarce edition published by James R. Osgood, not the more common edition produced by George M. Smith. It is speculated that most of the Osgood copies may have perished in the Great Boston Fire of November 9, 1872. In any event, it is estimated that between 50 and 100 copies may exist. Thick 8vo, original green cloth decorated in black and gilt with the jellyfish as the front cover vignette (Smith's edition has Captain Nemo using a sextant. Very good condition without a dust jacket as issued. Spine has been professionally rebacked retaining all of the original cloth. End papers have some minor fraying at the front edges, and there is an ink signature with "Christmas 1872" on the page preceding the half title. Very scarce.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First reasonably obtainable edition in English. 8vo. xiii, 303pp. Green cloth intricately blocked in gilt on the spine and upper board, all edges gilt, brown coated endpapers. Illustrated with 110 illustrations. Upper hinge neatly mended, front free endpaper rough and stained else this is a very good copy of en edition scarce in its own right. The first US edition was printed in Osgood earlier in the same year of 1873, but the Boston Fire destroyed all but about 50 copies. This Smith edition is consider by some as the first US edition, while others consider it the second printing of the first edition. It is, though, unquestionably the earliest edition in English reasonable obtainable. Protected in a custom, leather-backed clamshell case. .

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition, First Printing. A beautiful clean book with gilt titles, the original end papers and tissue guard. Crisp binding. The true first printing of this book was printed by Osgood in 1873. However the Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing so the 1873 Geo Smith printing is considered the next true first edition (or some refer to as the second printing of the first edition of this book), printed by Geo. M. Smith & Company 1873. Fully illustrated with 110 illustrations, 303 pages. The book is in great condition with vibrant emerald green boards with gilt scenes and titles to the front and spine, and still has the scarce original brown coated end papers. The book has benefited from some slight restoration with the spine rebacked with the original cloth laid back down, and presents extremely well. Original tissue guard is present. The interior pages are overall remarkably clean and fresh with only an occasional handling mark, but NONE of the usual staining and NONE of the usual foxing (but to title page from the result of the tissue guard). The book has no edgewear, and the binding is very tight and square, unlike most copies of this title which tend to have poor/cracked bindings and loose pages. Instead this book is tightly bound and is quite readable and not fragile. Has a spectacular presentation. Please see many detailed images. Beautiful rare, important Verne book in collectible Clean condition with the scarce original end papers. Perfect for a Verne collector, presenting well on the shelf with a nice crisp readable binding, and without the excessive wear, and broken bindings as is typically found with Verne books. Buch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware -Jules Verne (1828-1905) was born in the Breton river town of Nantes, and had a lifelong passion for the sea. First as a Paris stockbroker, later as a celebrated author and yachtsman, he went on frequent voyages-to Britain, America, the Mediterranean. But the specific stimulus for the novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas' was an 1865 fan letter from a fellow writer, Madame George Sand. She praised Verne's two early novels 'Five Weeks in a Balloon' (1863) and 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' (1864), then added: 'Soon I hope you'll take us into the ocean depths, your characters travelling in diving equipment perfected by your science and your imagination.' Thus inspired, Verne created one of literature's great rebels, a freedom fighter who plunged beneath the waves to wage a unique form of guerilla warfare. This translation is a faithful yet communicative rendering of the original French texts published in Paris by J. Hetzel et Cie.-the hardcover first edition issued in the autumn of 1871, collated with the softcover editions of the First and Second Parts issued separately in the autumn of 1869 and the summer of 1870. Although prior English versions have often been heavily abridged, this new translation is complete to the smallest substantive detail. The translator, F. P. Walter, is a long-standing member of the North American Jules Verne Society. He currently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. 496 pp. Englisch.
