Book
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. [HOLY LAND] [MIDDLETON] (E.J)], The Holiday Jaunts of a Busy Man, Small 4to, In original card wrappers decorated with a design drawn by the author: marginally shunned, signed with best wishes of the author, leaves crisp, pp. [v]112[i], Yarmouth, UK Pr. Jarrold and Sons Limited, 1935. A jolly and well-presented work of travel to the Middle East in the inter-war period. Whilst quintessentially English, trips of Middle Eastern interest account for over half of the book and are titled as: A trip to the Holy Land , From Yarmouth to Baghdad and A Memory of Palestine . These are supplemented by further chapters covering A Holiday in Sunny Spain , When the Mark Crashed , and 50 years of newspaper selling . Middleton had written a series of articles on his travels and produced this book as a collated set as requested by friends and family. .I do not claim for these articles any literary merit, but present them in everyday English as my own impressions of things as I saw them. (preface p.v). The author offers his thoughts and a brief history of the notable destinations that he passes which included Jerusalem, Damascus, Jericho, The Dead Sea, Lebanon, Galilee, Nazareth and Cairo. Baghdad deserves a special mention as capturing the eccentricity of the author. Middleton saw the main archaeological attractions at Ctesiphon, Ur and marvelled at the vast complex of Babylon. However, he was equally delighted to have been informed about the local Kipper Club. Now and again kippers are purchased and brought by air mail and distributed to its members, who look forward to them with great relish. Middleton (b.1875, d. unknown), appears to have been somewhat of a local celebrity of Greater Yarmouth, working as a newspaper printer and distributor (as mentioned in the final chapter), and seemingly setting up a taxi business. He was the mayor in 1923 (sitting twice in total) and there is a notable recorded achievement of him opening a road with the first roundabout of the borough. Scarce institutionally. Jisc locating just two copies in the UK at the University of Oxford and Trinity College Dublin.
