Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. Steadman, Ralph (illustrator). First Edition. Stated at copyright: A Bantam Book/November, 1983; number-line beginning w/3. Signed and inscribed by inimitable Gonzo artist Ralph Steadman at pictorial endpaper: "For Nandor, from Ralph Steadman, 17.6.86". If correct in reading inscription, from first letter N in name are two mad eyes and furled brow. Then, going above and beyond, Steadman takes the adjacent half-title and illustration and turns the "o's" in Lono into two eyes and offers up a gonzo caricature of the good doctor complete with hat and Dunhill and thought blurb: "Bad Craziness!" White pictorial wraps, light shelf, corner, edge wear. Front, back wraps feature several Steadman illustrations of 'Lono's Marlin Mask'. Large 7" x 10" design. Pages near fine. Bind fine. Profusely illustated in black and white and blazing color by Ralph Steadman. Near fine example of this uniquely signed rarity. Hunter Thompson, the king of Gonzo returns in The Curse of LONO when a seemingly absurd assignment is proposed by 'Running' magazine to cover the Honolulu Marathon. A hilarious, brain-curdling south Sea adventure ensues, the story of HST's epic escapades in Hawai'i. Weird tales from a Weird World by the quintessential outlaw journalist and best-selling author. The Curse of Lono is to Hawaii what Fear and Loathing was to Las Vegas: the crazy tales of a journalist's 'coverage' of a news event that ends up being a wild ride to the dark side of Americana. Originally published in 1983, Curse features all of the zany, hallucinogenic wordplay and feral artwork for which the Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman duo have become known and loved. This curious book featuring marathon reportage and big game fishing, is considered rather an oddity among Hunter's oeuvre. Includes vignettes by such icons as Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, and Ralph Emerson along with Steadman's slight doctoring of several more classical illustrations. 160 pages. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Signed by Artist.

[Original artwork] FIRST EDITION THUS, trade issue, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, with superb ORIGINAL PAINTING. Folio (39 x 30cm), pp.208. With numerous fantastical colour illustrations by Steadman, many double-paged. Publisher's white hardcovers screen-printed in black, colour-illustrated dust-jacket. To the half-title is a most personal painted caricature of author Hunter S. Thompson, dated 2006, in trademark blood red ink with flamboyant splashes, some of which are offset to the jacket. Both letters 'O' from the printed 'LONO' have been used to form the lenses of the good Doctor's trademark specs, depicted in typical style with cigarette and Lake Bucket hat. A fine copy. Originally published in a quarto format in 1983, this new folio edition features striking full-colour illustrations from Thompson's long-time friend and collaborator Ralph Steadman. Thompson died a month before this lavish book was published; Steadman's portraits of the author are scarce and desirable.
