The exact number of printed copies is unclear - numbers of 100, 300 and (most commonly) 400 are mentioned in the record. These copies were sent out as "loan" copies with every expectation they would be returned with annotations - after which they would be destroyed. Many copies were returned and disposed of according to this plan, but a handful of others were not - resulting in no more than 50 - and perhaps as few as 25 copies - surviving. WE HAVE A FULL THREE-PAGE DESCRIPTION OF THIS BOOK AND ITS PROVENANCE THAT WILL NOT FIT HERE BECASUSE OF ABE'S RESTRICTIONS ON SIZE. PLEASE CONTACT ME DIRECTLY FOR A COPY OF THAT DETAILED WRITE-UP. This copy of the book has been rebound twice. Once at some point Anonymous Book No. 2. of the First Hundred Mimeographed Copies" on the front cover in gilt lettering. By 1993, this second binding was in need of replacement so an identical looking black cloth binding (with exactly the same front cover title information) was created by Ron M. The first black cloth binding has been separately preserved along with the original endpapers from that binding. NOTE that the almost-never-seen red card covers (but not marked "Loan Copy" as some were supposed to have been) are both bound in here. Overall, an amazingly well-preserved and historically important annotated association copy of this major work that has saved the lives of so many people since its publication 75 years ago. First edition of Bill Wilsonâ s classic work, one of the best-selling books of all time, having sold 30 million copies. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a fine dust jacket. This volume is also accompanied by a typed note signed, stating: "This book was given to me by my father Henry G. Parkhurst, Jr. who told me that it was given to him by his father, Henry G. Parkhurst, Sr." Hank Parkhurst, a successful businessman in the early part of the 20th century, is regarded as the first alcoholic to recover through following Bill Wilson. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example, most rare in this condition; easily one of the nicest examples extant. Alcoholics Anonymous "The Big Book" is one of the best-selling books of all time, having sold 30 million copies. In 2011, Time magazine placed the book on its list of the 100 best and most influential books written in English since 1923, the beginning of the magazine. In 2012, the Library of Congress designated it as one of 88 "Books that Shaped America.".

The Leyshon Collection gathers two dozen books and an assortment of documents and ephemera from the first decades of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. Included is a first printing of Alcoholics Anonymous (1939), two books signed by Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson, and several other early editions of both the 'Big Book' and other foundational A.A. texts. The collection was assembled by Webster "Chad" and Martha "Marty" Leyshon between 1963 and 2010, and also includes photos, documents and other ephemera from their shared lifetime of service to the Metro D.C. recovery community. Chad Leyshon (1925-2013) entered A.A. in 1963 after his wife began attending Al-Anon meetings in 1961. When he passed away on May 20th, 2013 he was just two weeks shy of celebrating 50 years of sobriety. Recalling their father's early recovery, his family remembers Chad "having all-night talks" with struggling alcoholics, driving folks to A.A. meetings, and facilitating gatherings at nearby correctional institutions and hospitals. In the following five decades, Marty and Chad (who worked for thirty-seven years with the National Institute of Health) became beloved members of the local recovery community, won numerous awards for their service, and became involved with A.A./Al-Anon/Alateen leadership at the state, national, and international levels. Always committed to serving others, the Leyshon's were also active in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. This collection represents two lifetimes dedicated to service; of turning their own struggles into an opportunity to help others overcome addiction. Webster "Chad" Leyshon Service and Awards: Service: A.A. General Service (Area 13) Committee Chair; A.A. General Service (Area 13) Archivist; Delegate to National and International Conventions of A.A. Awards: 1986 NIDR EEO Special Achievement Award (presented by then-Surgeon General C. Everett Koop); 1978 NIH Merit Award ("For long and dedicated service as a volunteer counselor with the Alcoholism Rehabilitation Program."); 1977 Certificate of Appreciation Awarded by the Washington Area Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse for Outstanding Contribution In Volunteer Community Service. Marty Leyshon Service and Awards: Service: Al-Anon Intergroup Chairperson; Al-Anon Speakers Bureau, Al-Anon Public Affairs; Al-Anon Annual Conference Coordinator; National Al-Anon Representative to the 1970 White House Conference on Children and Youth; Alateen Group Co-Sponsor; Local Alateen-Sponsor's Forum. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 2nd Edition. Second edition, Seventh Printing. Inscribed and SIGNED by Bill and Lois Wilson on verso of front free endpaper : "Dear Chuck -/ Lois Joins me / in all affection / and in confident / faith that the / years to come / will be your finest / Ever. / Bill / Stepping Stones / Jan 15 / 66". Below that is Lois' inscription in her own hand: "With Heaps of Love / Lois." Octavo. xxx, 575 pages. Bound in full blue morocco with gilt rules on covers, and inner dentelles, light-yellow silk bookmark bound in. Spine in six compartments with gilt lettering, rules and decorations. Top edge gilt. Lovely blue leather binding in beautiful condition. The seventh printing was published in March 1965. The signature page of this book is integral to the binding (see photo), so the binding precedes the January 1966 inscription, meaning that the book must have been finely bound in 1965 and promptly presented to Bill and Lois for signature. This is the only copy I have seen that was inscribed by Wilson into an already finely bound copy. This no doubt came about because the "Chuck" in the dedication was Chuck Gibian, one of Bill Wilson's sponsees. They became close friends over the years. This copy comes with a twelve page typescript (about his journey in sobriety) by Chuck, together with his AA "Birds of a Feather" pin. Chuck's typescript has minor annotations and corrections in ink, and an old paperclip rust spot on the top left corner Birds of a Feather International is an organization formed in response to the need of pilots and other cockpit crew members for a forum in which the subject of alcohol and drug addiction can be discussed with impunity and immunity. Chuck was an early "Bird" and served as a panel member on behalf of the National Council on Alcoholism. In November 1976, the FAA issued their exemption letter allowing sober recovering alcoholics to fly as crew members. Chuck was the first to apply and receive his exemption on January 15, 1977 (Birds of a Feather Website). The 12-page testimonial included here recounts Chuck's experience as a professional airline pilot and recovering alcoholic. His "Birds of a Feather" pin is attached to the last page of the typescript. This would be a centerpiece for any AA collection, with a beautiful binding and a fine inscription by Bill and Lois. Book is very near fine, tiny touch of wear to gilt only. A wonderful copy SIGNED by both Bill and Lois. Signed by Author(s).

First edition of this history of Alcoholics Anonymous. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Lengthily inscribed by Bill Wilson on the front free endpaper, "Dear Earl S. With this all my gratitude for your dedicated service and your constant friendship Ever Bill NY 9/16/58." Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and wear. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international mutual aid fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. AA's stated "primary purpose" is to "stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety". With other early members, Bill Wilson and Bob Smith developed AA's Twelve Step program of spiritual and character development. AA's initial Twelve Traditions were introduced in 1946 to help the fellowship be stable and unified while disengaged from "outside issues" and influences. The Traditions recommend that members remain anonymous in public media, altruistically help other alcoholics, and that AA groups avoid official affiliations with other organizations. They also advise against dogma and coercive hierarchies. Subsequent fellowships such as Narcotics Anonymous have adopted and adapted the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions to their respective primary purposes.
