Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The classic encyclopedia of American fly patterns from one of the classic names in fly fishing. In 1890, Mary Orvis Marbury - daughter of the founder of The Orvis Company - wrote to anglers all over the country soliciting information on their favorite flies and how they were to be made and used. Her inquiries resulted in publishable responses from more than two hundred fly fishermen in thirty-eight states. Marbury compiled these responses to form this book, first published in 1892. Favorite Flies went through nine printings by 1896 - a fishing best-seller even by today's standards. With its clear descriptions of nearly 300 flies, accompanied by fascinating - and expert - advice on their use, this definitive compilation sounds as startlingly current today as it did over a century ago. (6 X 9, 576 pages, color photos, b&w photos, illustrations) Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Gilt decorated green cloth; 8vo; 522pp; illustrated with 6 engravings, 8 b/w photos plus 32 full-page color plates of flies; color pictorial dust jacket. The 1st facsimile reprinting of Marbury's classic 1892 work on fishing flies, "with many replies from practical anglers to inquiries concerning how, when, and where to use them." Not only was she one of the first American female angling-book authors, but also in this book she wrote about the large number of women fly tiers who labored to create the many colorful patterns in use during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Both book and jacket are in solid VG condition save for a few wrinkles on front panel plus a few cello tape edge reinforcements inside of jacket. An affordable alternative to the pricey editions from the 1890's.

Boston and New York. Houghton, Mifflin and Company. 1892. Large Octavo (8 1/2 x 7 1/2). vii, [1], 522 pp. Early Printing, with the 1892 publication date on the copyright page and no date on the title page. Photo frontispiece with tissue guard. Thirty-two colored plates of artificial flies with tissue guards. Six engravings of natural insects. Eight black and white plates. With Many Replies from Practical Anglers to Inquiries Concerning How, When and Where to Use Them. Mary Orvis Marbury's book showcases American chromolithography at its best - spectacular, beautiful color renditions of fly patterns at the height of the Victorian period: the Salmon fly patterns are fresh and up-to-date; the Trout and Bass patterns, while quite beautiful, are rarely used today; nevertheless they did form the structure and direction of many of today's fly patterns. The book is bound in its original two-tone green cloth with gilt titles on the spine and front cover with gilt decorations. Top edge gilt. The color plates are bright and clean. There's a neat previous owner's signature on the front paste down. A nice book, one of the nicest I've seen. It's bright, clean and with nary a trace of wear. Near fine.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Two tone green cloth with gilt titles and decorations on spine and front cover, top-edge gilt, 8vo, 522pp, illustrated with 32 stunning chromolithographic plates of flies plus engravings and reproductions of photographs. The 1892 date appears on the title page, making this the 1st printing as this title went through numerous printings at the end of the 19th century. A cornerstone work for any collection of American angling books. The author was the daughter of fishing tackle magnate Charles Orvis. This copy is in good to very good condition with edge wear, corner bumping, spine titles lightly faded, hinges starting to crack but holding firmly, occasional small edge tears to a few pages. Internally very clean with all plates quite bright with their corresponding tissue guards. A decent copy on an important title and quite hard-to-find in the 1st printing.
