After establishing a friendship with Salvador Dalí over the course of several years, Dr. Giuseppe Albaretto commissioned the artist to create 100 paintings based on passages selected from the Latin Vulgate Bible. Himself a devout Catholic, Albaretto's intention in commissioning Dali for this massive undertaking was to bring the artist back to his religious roots. An extraordinary autograph manuscript in French, signed ?Salvador Dali?, five pages on large 16? x 17? sheets, circa 1953. Dali?s handwritten manuscript for a piece entitled Mes secrets sinematographiques [My cinematic secrets], originally published in February 1954 in No. 14 of the review La Parisienne, in an adaptation by Michel Déon, who normalized Dali?s aberrant spelling and syntax. The manuscript reveals the delirious orality of the original Dalian text, with important variations; it is written in singular language, interspersed with Hispanicisms and phonetically reproducing the Catalan accent. Dali first affirms the conviction of his genius in cinematographic art by recalling the importance of his first two films, Un chien andalou and L?Âge d?or, and by denigrating the role of the filmmaker Luis Buñuel in the realization of these. He unveils his film project La Brouette de flesh, describing the delirious visions and hallucinations he intends to put into images. On the third page, Dali sketches two interesting figures in different styles ? one a grotesque portrait a la Francis Bacon, and the other executed in the Cubist mode. For the work, Salvador Dalí provided a frontispiece and an illustration for each of the book s twelve chapters. While the illustrations are wonderfully disjointed and dreamlike, what unifies them all is the presence of Alice, portrayed in each illustration as a girl holding a jump rope over her head. This evocative figure appears in a number of Dalí s works, perhaps most notably in his painting, Landscape with Girl Skipping Rope (1936). It is believed that the figure was inspired by the shape of a bell tower at Dalí s sister s school. Another notable aspect of the illustrations is the inclusion of a melting clock in the Mad Tea Party illustration, reminiscent of the clocks in one of Dalí s most enduring works, The Persistence of Memory (1931). Folio. 2 pp. on single leaves. Comprehensive letter to the choreographer and ballet dancer Léonide Massine, director of the "Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo", concerning Dalí's ballett "Tristan Fou". Dalí had started arrangements for "Tristan Fou" with Massine designated for the leading role in 1937. In the letter Dalí refers to "Tristan Fou" as "our spectacle", meaning Massine and him, and justifies the title with Tristan's mad love for Isolde: "Très cher ami: ge deja bocoub trabaille a notre espectacle [.] - Elle s'apellera TRISTAN FOU ge crois que cest un titre assez abile pour le public [ ] ge pense que les deux noms ensemble son d'un assez gran efet poetique - Mon heubre port du moment ou dans la legende Tristan de bien fou d'amour, l'obsesion du souvenir d'Isolde le devore l'entement jusqua la mort [ ]". For the characterization of Massine's role as a "mad Tristan" who would be hallucinating and depressed Dalí draws an interesting comparison with the comedian Harpo Marx: "Ge vois en vous un Role etonon, ebluisant du 'Tristan fou' allucine, plonge dans un etat de depresion et aneontisements totals [ ] un peu dans l'estile d'Arpo Marx [ ]". An important aspect for Dalí are the costume ideas of the french fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli who also collaborated in the play. She envisaged an overabundance of bobbin lace and rhinestones for Tristan's costume: "vous serez abille entierement dans des grandes dentelles, tres curieusement decoupes une perruque blonde decoife - Schiaparelly trouve tout le temps des idees pour tout magnifiques! Il i aura enormement de bijoux, naturellement des faux bijous!" In the closing paragraphs Dalí announces that he will do the theater placard himself and that he wants to keep the French title in a possible American production, as it would lose "violence and dramatism" in translation: "Ge pense aussi, que [.] ca serai tres importan que ge puisse faire moi meme l'ofiche de Tristan Fou, destine a la publicite - Dans le cas au le titre perdre en 'violonce et dramatisme' une fois traduit en anglais, ge crois que lon pourrai l'aisser le titre en Français meme pour L'amerique [ ]". - The ballet premiered in 1944 in New York under the title "Mad Tristan". - With some slight tears to the border.

To a friend with compliments on his article in Time Magazine, and offering him a chance to photograph his famous painting "Assumpta Corpuscularia Lapislazulina", a work of his "corpuscular" period which he considers historic and explosive, that is scheduled to be exhibited in New York at the end of the year: "Querido Amigo - Su noticia en Time muy brillante - A fines de Octubre se podra fotog[r]afiar mi 'Asomcion de la virgen' que sera expuesto fines de Diciembre en Nuewa York. Creo una oportunidad unica ya que es un cuadro 'corpuscular i explosivo' historico en mi vida [.]". With a certificate of authenticity from the publisher attesting to the genuineness of the 10 engravings. Micheler Lopsinger notes that the original plan was to illustrate a more erotic text, but this was rejected in favor of the present one. The etchings were reworked and amplified in drypoint by Dali, and all impressions were gilded by Atelier Jacomet. Tristan Corbiére's Les Amours Jaunes (The Yellow Loves, or Wry Loves, 1873), drew the attention of Paul Verlaine, who included him in his "Les poètes maudits". He is acknowledged as both a Symbolist of note and a precursor to the Surrealists, and inspired these imaginative reactions from Dali. Michler & Lopsinger 693-702. Paul Eluard.?» C'est en 1929 que René Char découvre les vers de Paul Eluard ; subjugué, le jeune poète islois de vingt-deux ans décide de lui envoyer un exemplaire de son recueil Arsenal sur lequel il rédige cette dédicace?: «?à Paul éluard enfin. L'Isle, 17 septembre 1929.?» Son aîné lui répond avec bienveillance quelques semaines plus tard?: «?Cher Monsieur, n'est-il pas possible que nous nous connaissions mieux?? Ne pensez-vous pas venir à Paris?? Je serais heureux de vous dire combien j'aime vos poèmes - tout ce si beau livre.?» Le jeune Char est exalté et part pour la première fois rencontrer son «?frère de substitution?» (Laurent Greilsamer, René Char, Perrin, 2012), puis prend rapidement la décision de venir s'installer à Paris auprès de ses nouveaux compagnons Aragon, Breton et éluard et se range sous la bannière surréaliste. éluard, abandonné par Gala qui le quitte pour Dali, propose à Char de venir vivre dans l'appartement de la rue Becquerel. Les deux célibataires engagent bientôt Odette, une jeune bonne pour le moins avenante?: «?Char apprécie ce service stylé et s'étonne cependant de la gentillesse appuyée de cette jolie brune.
