About near fine book with some mild wear to the spine ends and the corners, light scattered bubbling to the coating of the rear panel and spine, and very slight lean to the spine. An excellent copy of the exceptionally scarce true first British edition of the first Harry Potter novel. First published in 1997, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter heptalogy. It introduces both Harry and readers alike to the secret, magical world of witches and wizards in Great Britain. It also sets the stage for the six subsequent novels by familiarizing readers with the villainous Lord Voldemort and how his and Harry's fates are inevitably intertwined. Although often regarded as a children's novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone topped adult reading charts in the UK, and in the United States, where it was published under the alternate title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Notably, the first printing of this book in hardcover format is exceedingly rare; only 500 copies were printed, of which about half ended up in libraries. Despite its small print run, the book was an immediate success, and went through dozens of print runs within the first few years after publication.

    Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. HARDBACK - A very good example, one of the very rare 500 true first edition copies published by Bloomsbury in 1997. The publisher's laminated boards are in clean condition with a little creasing to the rear panel, which may be a publishing fault. The mis-spelled Philospher's is present to the rear panel, with the Wizardry and Witchcraft, rather than Witchcraft and Wizardry also present. The binding is very well preserved, tight and solid, with the publisher's original laminate entirely present. There is a little pushing to the spine tips, with very light rubbing to the corners of the book. Internally, there is a contemporary inscription to the front end-paper. The inner pages are clean and fresh with the usual toning to the page block, due to the cheap paper stock used in the printing of this title. There are a couple of pages with very light folds to the corners. There is also a small foxing spot to the page-block, else the pages are clean and fresh. Please be assured that this title is NOT an EX LIBRARY copy and has had no restoration, re-colouring, or touching up performed to it. A clean example, and a genuinely rare title.

This copy was formerly owned by a primary school in Leicestershire which closed its doors on January 1, 2003. It has a neat rectangular stamp to the front free end-paper as its only evidence of having formerly been owned by a school. This is a VG copy with a slight spine lean. No fading whatsoever to the spine. Slightly pushed spine tips. A touch of rubbing and minor wear to the extremities. The rear board has a couple of faint creases and there are faint scratches in places to both the front and back boards. Lifting of the laminate in just one or two places. The page block has the inevitable toning due to the poor quality of paper used. Page 19 through 21 have just the faintest damp stain to the right hand corner (hardly worth mentioning). Really clean pages. No inscriptions. The boards are really bright and vibrant and overall this is a solid VG copy. Not issued with a D/W. The hardback first edition is of legendary scarcity this being one of 300 copies that were sent to schools and libraries. It is a TOTALLY HONEST COPY with ABSOLUTELY NONE OF THE 'DREADED' RESTORATION OR 'TOUCHING UP' WHATSOEVER AND IS IN NICE SHELVABLE CONDITION. Please note: Although this has a school ownership stamp to the front free end-paper this is NOT an ex-library copy. This book is housed in a stunning, bespoke, red half-leather clamshell box. Ex-libris copy from the Edinburgh Public Library and as such unique and highly desirable coming from the author s hometown where the Harry Potter books were written. This is the true hardback first edition with all first issue points present: the Wendy Cooling blurb on the front panel; the rear panel bears the typo with an o missing in Philosopher s and Hogwarts School of Wizardy and Witchcraft instead of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. Page 53 lists wand twice as called for. No dust jacket as issued. One of only 500 copies printed of which the majority (300) went into public libraries. This is an ex-library copy and has been professionaly restored. The book is housed in a full red leather solander box with five raised bands and lined wih black suede. Provenance: Edinburgh Public Library with the usual library card affixed to the front free endpaper showing the loan stamps from 15 December 1997 until 12 October 1999. An official Withdrawn stamp across shows that this copy has officially been pulled out of service and that it is not one of the many stolen ex-libris copies. In all, the book was borrowed 27 times and at that stage the book would show signs of wear to the fragile boards and therefore replaced for a new copy. The copyright page bears an Edinburgh City Libraries stamp showing the acquisition date (29 September 1997) and the price of GBP 10.99. The fact that the book is connected to Rowling s hometown makes this a very special copy indeed and arguably the most desirable among the 300 ex-library copies. Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone was written in Edinburgh cafés, and Rowling now lives close to the city. Condition: presents in very good to near fine condition as our images showcase. All pages are present. There are no scribbles inside, no drawings, no graffiti of any sorts apart from the library stamp as mentioned above. This edition has been printed on cheap paper stock and therefore the paper is prone to natural ageing of which this copy is no exception. The page block edges are yellowed/ darkened commensurate with age. The bottom page block edge has a tiny library mark as shown in the image. A conservation expert has undertaken restoration to the boards in order to restore rubbing to the spine tips, corners of the boards and spine joints. The buyer may rest assured that this has all been done by the leading UK expert in modern first edition restoration. Rowling and Harry Potter need no further introduction. The most popular children fantasy series of the last decades which sold hundreds of million copies world wide in its over 60 languages to date. Perhaps Rowling s most important credit is that with the captivating story of a young wizard boy named Harry Potter she made reading cool again for an entire generation of kids which grew up on electronic media entertainment. Flatsigned first editions are exceptionally rare, with the few that have appeared on the market previously containing a signed bookplate. JK Rowling's signature without any dedication is sought after. Additionally this is an early example of Rowling's signature, penned around the same time as publication when she was still unknown. Highly uncommon. True first editions are incredibly scarce, this being one of just 5,015 copies of the softback and is even more rare being signed. 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' and 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' are signed by the author to their dedication leaves. The set is accompanied by five photographs of the signing event, one of which features J.K. Rowling herself at the event, as well as in-store ephemera for the 'Chamber of Secrets' book launch. The books were purchased upon publication by the children's book buyer at Dillon's in Newcastle in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They were also responsible for organising the event where the books were signed. The first three volumes were signed at the start of 'Goblet of Fire' book launch, before the general public were granted entry, at Waterstones in Newcastle on Monday 10th July 2000, just a couple of days after the trade edition was published. The Deluxe edition of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' was not published at the same time as the first trade edition and is, therefore, not signed. Publisher's original red, blue, green, purple, burgundy, blue and black cloth with lettering to spine and upper boards in gilt, pictorial on-lays, silk ribbon markers and gold edges. An excellent, fine set. It is truly unique for the author's signatures to come with this level of provenance. Signed by Author(s).

The stunning condition soft cover has strong unfaded colors with even the spine colors still being vibrant and withOUT any of common color fading to the spine. The binding is tight and square. The wraps are in great condition with some soft light creasing to the rear panel and only a very soft corner crease to the upper front panel. A few very tiny tip/edge rubs (hard to even see in the images) and no laminate issues,(which is unusual as most copies tend to have fully lifted or missing laminate). The interior pages are very clean, unusually bright and flat with only a hint of age toning. The pages have no handling marks, no writing, no marks, no stains and no foxing, no owners names and no inscriptions. A beautiful clean, bright copy with strongly colored outer wraps, EXTREMELY scarce in this condition! Please see images.     Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Joanne Kathleen Rowling (1997) Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone , UK first edition, second impression, published in hardback by Bloomsbury. Together with a signed Hogwarts Express card with the same Thomas Taylor artwork as on the first edition front panel of the book. Following the first hardback printing of 500 copies, of which some 300 went to public libraries, the second impression followed quickly with a run of 1,000 copies [Errington 2017: 4]. Just like with the hardback first print, the second print was issued without a dust jacket. Condition: a beauitiful unrestored copy in near fine condition in the true sense of the wording. There are no previous owner s scribbles inside, no names, no bookplates and no stamps. The boards are square, tight with NO fading on the spine nor anywhere else. Bear minimal shelf wear. There is a laminate crease which is a slight production error and is not a condition issue. Slight toning to the page block commensurate with age including a few ageing spots as shown. This is a natural ocurrance due to the cheap paper stock used at the time with a high paper acid content and only pronounces the authenticity of the book. Internally all pages are clean and free of any underlining, annotations etc. The page block was bound in slightly skewed (see image of the front pastedown). Again, this is a manufacturing inaccuracy and forms part of the history of the book. In short, a beautiful specimen hard to find in better condition. Children books often suffer from corresponding treatment of their young readers, but this copy has survived the passage of time nicely. Harry Potter quickly became a global phenomenon and is as popular as ever among children and adults alike. In 1997, the first volume of the seven volume strong story arch was issued for the first time by Bloomsbury in the UK in hardback and simultanously in paperback . The hardback first edition was issued in 500 copies mostly intended for the public library market. The trade has assumed that about 300 of those 500 copies found their way into libraries receiving the usual treatment with stamps and readership handling. As a consequence any hardback first edition in good condition which is not ex-libris commands a high price. Many collectors therefore resort to one of the 5,150 first impression paperback copies. However, the collecting world always prefers a hardback book not least because it is more durable. This second impression was, according to Errington [2017: 4] issued in 1,000 copies and then followed by three reprints of further 500 copies. The second print had some textual errors corrected including the famous double wand error on page 53, and the missing o in Philosopher as well as the order of Witchcraft and Wizardry on the back panel. However, the blurb on the back panel is still essentially the same whereas from the third print onwards the blurb was much shortened. The second impression was also issued without a dust jacket. A very nice book that looks unread and would be a fine+ copy if not for the light fading to the spine. The set belonged to a girl whose grandmother ran a hairdressers in Watford which JK Rowling's aunt Marian Fox went to. Marian gave the girl the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, second print. The girl was later given the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with the signed JK Rowling bookplate by Marian, which she stuck into the first book (though the bookplate was really intended for the second book, the Chamber of Secrets, as can be seen from the wording). The girl later had an accident that sent her to hospital and JK Rowling sent her a get well card. Lastly, the young girl received a copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban from Marian, passed on to her by her grandmother. Handwritten letter from the former girl and owner of the books included (photo can be supplied). A very good copy of the hard to find first print. Jacket is the first state jacket and has not been price-clipped and is not sunned at the spine.
