Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the Spring of 1857, with India on the brink of a violent and bloody mutiny, Krishnapur is a remote town on the vast North Indian plain. For the British there, life is orderly and genteel. Then the sepoys at the nearest military cantonment rise in revolt and the British community retreats with shock into the Residency. They prepare to fight for their lives with what weapons they can muster. As food and ammunition grow short, the Residency, its defences battered by shot and shell and eroded by the rains, becomes ever more vulnerable. The Siege of Krishnapur is a modern classic of narrative excitement that also digs deep to explore some fundamental questions of civilisation and life. 'Suspense and subtlety, humour and horror, the near-neighbourliness of heroism and insanity: it is rare to find such divergent elements being controlled in one hand and being raced, as it were, in one yoke. But Farrell manages just this here: his imaginative insight and technical virtuosity combine to produce a novel of quite outstanding quality' The Times 'The magnificient passages of action in The Siege of Krishnapur , its gallery of characters, its unashamedly detailed and fascinating dissertations on cholera, gunnery, phrenology, the prodigal inventiveness of its no doubt also well-documented scenes should satisfy the most exacting and voracious reader. For a novel to be witty is one thing, to tell a good story is another, to be serious is yet another, but to be all three is surely enough to make it a masterpiece' John Spurling, New Statesman 'For a novel to be witty is one thing, to tell a good story is another, to be serious is yet another, but to be all three is surely enough to make it a masterpiece' New Statemsan Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is the second novel in Farrell's Empire trilogy and it won the Booker Prize for 1973. The text block is square, tightly bound and firmly hinged. There is some light spotting on the top and bottom edges (of the text block) but none on the fore-edge. The green cloth bound boards are unmarked and have straight edges and sharp corners. Internally the pages are spotless apart from the ffep on which there is a previous resale price written in pencil together with a note saying that the book is a first edition, and a few very small marks. The colours of the battle scene on the dust jacket remain strong and well defined and the original price (£2.25 net) has not been cut off. A number of tears on the front, back and spine panels have been neatly and inconspicuously repaired. There is some chipping along the top edge of the front panel and small area of loss at the bottom left of the spine panel. See five photos of this book.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Special Edition. First printing of this brilliant First Edition thus, with textual emendations from the original Weidenfeld edition, and a unique introduction by Hilary Mantel. This latter is not just a bubbly enthusiastic rave, it is typically filled with Mantelian insight. The edition itself, for the very first time, does justice to a great novel. With all the considerable skill Farrell demonstrated in the magnificent 'Troubles', he illuminates the extraordinary moment when the British Empire was revealed to be vulnerable. The clash between religion and science is also examined. So, at last, we have a brilliant edition of this marvellous novel, and it is a great pleasure to be able to recommend this fine Folio issue as the supreme collectors version of this work. A great book gets its ideal and worthwhile treatment; the typeface is Perpetua, the paper is acid free Abbey Wove, and the cloth binding is decorated and protected by a sturdy slipcase. Wonderful specially commissioned illustrations, unique to this edition, as is the introduction. This copy is unread and mint perfect for the collector. All who admire this wonderful Booker winner will want this superlative edition. It is superb in every way, and this is its FIRST EDITION THUS. Forty years after it was first published, Troubles, by J G Farrell, is announced as the winner of the Lost Man Booker Prize - a one-off prize to honour the books published in 1970, but not considered for the prize when its rules were changed. It won by a clear majority, winning 38% of the votes by the international reading public, more than double the votes cast for any other book on the shortlist. Troubles was followed by The Siege of Krishnapur which then went on to win the Booker Prize in 1973 and was shortlisted for the Best of the Booker, a special award created to mark the 40th anniversary of the prize in 2008. Had Troubles been the winning novel in 1970, JG Farrell would have gone on to become the first author to win the Booker Prize twice. So, a great novel is finally given the heirloom standard production it so richly deserves. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng.
